Adopt a Village is a website for supporters of the tsunami relief operations in the Sri Lankan division of Vakari.

This website and the relief operation it supports is the initiative of a number of Australians who witnessed the immediate aftermath of the 26th December 2004 tsunami which devastated the coastline of Sri Lanka. They were either in Sri Lanka at the time, or went there to help with the relief efforts.

Operating independently of relief agencies, they took aid to many coastal areas but were struck by the plight of one area in particular.

The scale of this unprecedented disaster - the global death toll is over 250,000 - has made many of us ask "how can we help in a meaningful way?" Giving money is one thing, but knowing how it is relieving the suffering of families in affected areas is quite another. That is why our group has chosen to focus on the rebuilding of one village, Vakari.
